If you haven’t heard of video blogger Zoella, where have you been? We don’t think she’d mind if you hadn’t heard of her anyway, as her main YouTube channel has over six million subscribers and over 260 million video views, her second channel ‘MoreZoella’ has over two million subscribers and over 125 million video views, and she also has over two million followers on Twitter and over three million on Instagram, so she’s doing well.
Now a professional full-time vlogger, real name Zoe Sugg has become huge, having now launched her own beauty brand in Superdrug, signed a two-book deal, and won countless awards, including the 2014 Teen Choice Award for ‘Choice Web Star: Fashion/Beauty.’
Vlogging is now a huge business. BBC Radio 1 has realised this and is working with 10 stars of YouTube, including UK comedian TomSka (aka Thomas Ridgewell), BritPopJohnson and, of course, Zoella.
If you’re one of the many people wanting to follow in the footsteps of famous Youtube stars, and begin vlogging, we’re giving our top tips on how to get started, and even, maybe, become professional like Zoella and co.
1) Think of a topic
What do you want to talk about? What are you interested in or passionate about? It could be anything, as long as it’s not boring, insulting, or illegal.
Look to other vloggers, like Vlogbrothers or Jenna Marbles, for inspiration, but remember you have to stay true to yourself, and make it unique, so don’t copy them completely.
2) Get a Youtube account
This may sound obvious, but it’s obviously a crucial step in making it as a vlogger! The main thing when creating your Youtube account is to make sure your username is fun and relates to your name or what your videos are about.
It just doesn’t look right having an unreadable username with loads of random numbers and letters, and there’s no way you’d make it big with a name like ‘pGr38fYyk’.
3) Make sure you have lots of GOOD videos
You’re not going to get anywhere if you make rubbish videos to start with, as no one’s going to take you seriously. The better and more interesting the video is, the more likely people are going to come back!
Post one or two daily for a little while, and then go daily or every other day after that. Try not to skip two days, especially when you start, because it that will give viewers low standards to begin with.
4) Post your videos on more well-known channels
If you post one of your videos as a video response to a related, well-known video, you’ll be sure to get some extra people seeing your work – at least a fifth of the view of the original video!
Don’t just post it to any old viral though, as it will just seem like spam, and no one likes spam!
5) Don’t get lazy!
If you get a momentum going with your vlogs, keep going! People are going to lose interest if you don’t post a video for months. If possible, try and set specific days to upload videos, and keep a regular schedule of at least once a week, so that your subscribers know when to expect your next post.
6) Edit your videos
Editing your videos to make them look good, can be the difference between someone getting bored of you speaking and someone subscribing to watch more. It’s not as hard as you think to do either.
Windows and Android have Movie Maker preinstalled and all Apple products have iMovie, and there are tons on tutorials online on how to use these programs.
7) Become a Youtube partner
You’ll need to have a few thousand views to become a Youtube partner, but once you are one, you’ll be able to allow ads to be displayed on your videos, meaning you earn money. It also means your video will appear much more often in search results too, as well as the ability to make your channel more good looking with a banner, avatar and video thumbnail.
8) Communicate with your followers
If you get comments on your video, reply to them. You could reply to them through commenting back, or even addressing them in your next vlog. You’ll also most likely start getting people tweeting you, so take time to reply to as many as you can. This leaves a good impression and your followers will appreciate it.
